What is Neurodiversity?

Neurodiversity as a label encapsulates any and all differences in the brain than what is considered “neurotypical”. This includes but isn’t limited to neurodivergence that one is born with, or neurodivergence that one acquires later on in life.

We are a part of the Neurodiversity Foundation, and encourage you to come and join us for other events as well!

Some Examples of Neurodivergence are:
  • Dyslexia, Dyscalculia, Dysgraphia, Dyspraxia
  • Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD), Obsessive Compulsive Disorder (OCD), Schizophrenia, Borderline personality disorder (BPD)
  • Tourette syndrome ADHD, Autism
  • Plurality, Dissociative Identity Disorder (DID), Otherwise Specified Dissociative Disorder (OSDD)
  • Epilepsy, Traumatic Brain Injury (TBI), Parkinson’s disease, Long COVID’s neurological effects

This list is far from exhaustive but is provided to try and help demonstrate the scope of the neurodivergent label. Everyone deserves to be here, regardless of “what type of neurodiversity” they have- everyone is valid and has a seat at the table.

Is Neurodivergence a Disability?

Neurodivergence isn’t explicitly labelled as a disability from the conception of the term, however people who are neurodivergent may identify as disabled due to their neurodivergence, or are made disabled by their neurodiversity-hostile environment. In the end, the label of disabled is both up to the person and their environment to define, and it can shift depending on context, environment and individual comfort.
